When money is tight, it is tempting to put off every car repair until some vague “later.” Most of the time, that is fine. But four things on your car are never in the “later” pile: brakes, lights, driveline and tyres.

These are not just safety items. They are a legal requirement, which means driving with them worn or faulty can cost you a fine on top of the risk.

Brakes

The one part you never gamble on. If your brakes are flagged, that is a stop-and-deal-with-it job, not a wait-and-see one.

Lights

Being seen is half of staying safe, especially in winter and at night. A blown bulb is cheap to fix and illegal to ignore.

Driveline

The parts that actually get the power to your wheels. Problems here tend to grow, and a small issue left alone can turn into a big bill.

Tyres

Your only contact with the road. Worn tyres do not grip, particularly in the wet, and under the legal tread limit they are an instant fine. A quick check of the tread and pressure tells you a lot.

Everything else has a bit more breathing room

The good news is that plenty of other jobs genuinely can wait a while. The skill is knowing which bucket a repair falls into, and that is exactly what we teach at Her Car Confidence. The same habit of checking the small things yourself, like reading your oil, helps you catch the big ones early.

You do not need spare cash lying around to feel in control of your car. You just need to know what matters most.
